Big Island Day 1 - Part 3

As we rounded out our day, we had 2 more stops. First, we hit one more waterfall - Rainbow Falls was the icing on the top for waterfalls.
We saw wild boars on the way in. Jennie said that was on her bucket list before they go to Thailand so it was cool to see.
Someone had left seveal huge flowers under a tree so Kinley reached over the fence and took a few. I got pollen on my nose.. so of course Kinley took a picture.

After the falls, we were supposed to go to Kaumana Caves, but they were closed,  so  we headed up to the top of Mauna Kea mountain for the sunset. 14,000 feet up. We climbed 9000 feet to the Visitors center where they recommend you spend 30 mins to acclimate before continuing on. We waited about an hour before climbing on so we could get there by sunset. The girls were feeling a few symptoms and we debated whether to go or not. Kinley had a headache and Nali said she felt really light..
We decided to see if we could make it but that we would turn around if needed.  We had to wait in line while they checked our car. No one was allowed without 4wd. We had to put it in low and keep it in all the way up and down.
We got up there and tried to bundle up because  it was COLD! It was 46 degrees and dropping with the sun. We walked down several yards to get a good view. The sunset lasted at least a half hour.
The girls were cold so they walked back up to the jeep. Brin and Kinley used the porta pottys and almost passed out from pushing. Kinley's headache got really bad, Denali started swayingwhile standing. Everyone was feeling it,  but Adam wanted to see the sun go all the way down and then go to the lazer light show and star gazing at the visitor's center. The girls were getting worse so we took off. Brin started passing out, Denali kept trying to fall asleep, and then Kinley passed out and hit her head on the window a few times. Hydee was trying to hold Brin's head and keep her breathing while not passing out Kinley was holding Denali's hand and squeezing it when she went limp.
Adam was flying down the mtn passing cars 3-4 at a time! I was leading the girls in some deep breathing exercises trying to get the extra oxygen out and more carbon dioxide in. It was pretty scary.
When we got to the visitors center the girls wanted to keep going.  It was hard knowing we were missing a once in a lifetime experience. The ranger had to check everyone's brakes when they got down to the visitor's center. Ours was an A+, since we hardly used them.  On the way up we stopped because a couple had burned up their brakes and couldn't continue down.  This was a serious mountain!
We made it home safe and everyone went straight to bed.
End of day one!! On to the second day! Hopefully the app will stop crashing!
