Girls Camp

A new tradition is born.  Our church recently changed it's format for girls camp and no longer requires certifications each year. Because of COVID Brin has missed out on so many opportunities since she became a YW, such as baptisms for the dead, youth conference - which was virtual - and Girls Camp.

I was thinking about what I wanted to do for our school theme this year, when Kinley suggested we have our own girls camp. With her on board to help as a YCL our school theme turned into a 3 day girls camp over Labor Day.

THE THEME

In August Pres. Uctchdorf spoke to the Pathway Devotional and his talk was our main focus.  YOU ARE THE HERO OF YOUR OWN STORY.

Ucthdorf talked about if he could talk to his younger self that dreamed about flying airplanes, he would have told him not to worry so much about the things he couldn't change, but focus on what he could, it will be difficult, but it will be ok. Have faith.

He explained that characters in any story have a problem, and it will only get worse. But they always find there is someone to help them along their journey.

THE CAMP

I absolutely love where we live! We were able to set up camp in our own backyard! We actually spent 2 nights in the tent, as tempted as I was to sneak back to the house, I managed to stick it out! We even used the pasture to do our night hike! How handy is that?

We set up our campsite, sang some fun camp songs - or rather Kinley and I taught the girls the songs, and introduced the theme. I gave them packs with the theme on them, and journals and pillow treats, a song book and a new school planner since we are starting a new school year of home schooling this week.

We created our own superheroes and came up with a super power, and how we will use them to help others in need.

We went on a superhero-training night hike where we learned more about scripture heroes with the virtual help of relatives. Grammy talked about Joseph of Egypt, Sierra talked about Abish, Scott Johnson talked about Mormon, Harper taught about Nephi, I taught about Esther and Adam ended with Abinadi.  And they collected glow in the dark bracelets along the way.

Each day we did certification activities like fire starting, cooking two items over a fire, first aid and tying knots.

We spent the afternoon at the beach relaxing and playing together.

We ended our camp  by spending the day on a 3-mile hike. It was a real challenge but we did it! I think we remembered how great our sisters can be.
