Week 2 study reading Entrepreneurship

This week we read about making a life plan. We had to come up with  a list of 50 things on our Bucket List. This was hard. I couldn't even think of 15 things! So I asked my husband and kids to help. But half of the things they suggested I said no to. My daughter finally said, "Mom, it doesn't really matter what you put! If you keep being so negative about everything I can't help you!" So I had to be more open to new experiences. Although I was still pretty selective, I started getting more excited about some of them.

Lessons Learned-
A few things I took away from Randy Pausch-
His Dad taught him, whenever there is an elephant in the room introduce them.

John Snoddy taught him if you wait long enough, people will surprise and impress you. If you are upset with someone, wait longer, they will almost always surprise you.

Brick walls are there for a reason. They let us prove how badly we want something - they are there to keep the others out.

It's not about how to achieve your dreams, but how you lead your life. If you lead it right, your dreams will come to you.

Treat Life as an Experiment-

Risk being willing to fail
failing  forward - Thomas Edison never failed, 10,000 ways do not work
WD-40 - 39 ways it didn't work. Dyson - 5128 failures

What is your Calling in Life?
Times feel adrift important to tapestry of career
Martin Luther revolutionized how to look at work. taught how to find calling. It was pretty simple: your calling was to do whatever your station in life dictated.
John Calvin - For Calvin, it wasn’t our position in the social structure that determined God’s calling for us. Rather, he argued that God endows each of us with particular talents and gifts, and that it is our calling to discover those gifts and to seek out ways to use them in the service of our fellowmen.
Heresies cause anxiety.
D&C 58:27 work related work for the good of men. v. 28 - the power is in them = talents
2. one true calling - anxiety- heresy
Hales - To find the gifts we have been given, we must pray and fast. . . . I urge you each to discover your gifts and to seek after those that will bring direction to your life’s work and that will further the work of heaven. [Robert D. Hales, “Gifts of the Spirit,” Ensign, February 2002, 16]
If you think you like working with people - delve deeper- HOW do you like working with people?
Gift has market value/ highly portable
bring unique spiritual gift to whatever position Lord blesses you with
Focus on gifts - gifts are stable.
**Contrary to what the world might tell you, you don’t have to have a job to express your calling in life.
3. once find calling, work will be bliss
zookeepers- sacrifice/challenges -made work meaningful.
**We can’t expect deep meaningfulness from our calling unless we are willing to assume its burdens as well.
****Follow your bliss - follow your blisters! Joseph Campbell
4. world will take notice
**Look for nobility among those doing menial tasks
5. Meaningfulness in life is found in work
*Work is simply one stage upon which we can act out our service to God and our fellowmen.
Artist hoards art in attic - meant to be shared.
true meaning always comes from service
Mission President Wife - “When I do the laundry, I am building the kingdom of God. When I scrub the floors, I am serving the Lord. When I tidy the clutter, I’m an instrument in His hands. I do a lot of mundane jobs, but if my eye is single to God and I’m trying to serve my family, then I feel as much purpose in my work as a missionary can.” Like King Benjamin
*We need to be very cautious about our motives for the work we do. One of the great gospel ironies is that when we lose ourselves, we find ourselves.

Lessons Not yet Learned-
All 3 of my classes Intro ent, Intro SMM, and Personal achievement  are all about the same thing, Personal branding, life plans, and personal creeds. I am just struggling to know what I want to do with the rest of my life. When I was young, I had a plan - have my kids close together and early, they will grow up and move out and we will enjoy the rest of our lives at 45. God had different plans and added a part 2 to our family 10 years down the road. I learned that it, doesn't do any good to make plans, because God is going to lead you anyway. So now, after 25 years, we are looking at possible retirement at 50 - in 5 years, but our youngest still has 11 years before she moves out. He has led us on a path we never could have imagined! I am afraid to make plans for the future.
